Senior E-Motor Design Engineer

Torev Motors · Arlington, VA (Virtual Options Available) · Full-Time

About Us

We develop high-performance, magnet-free electric motors based on axial flux wound rotor technology — eliminating rare-earth dependencies while achieving power densities that compete with the best permanent magnet designs on the market. We hold issued patents, have a 15kW prototype operational in our lab, and are backed by U.S. Army SBIR funding. Our engineering team is small and technical, and we are building deliberately.

The Role

This is one of the company’s early engineering hires and one of the most consequential we will make. You will be a foundational member of our engineering team with the opportunity to shape our research and development program while being a key contributor to the conceptualization, detailed design, prototyping, and testing of new and advanced, high-efficiency, high-performance, electric machines, and the development of new electric machine technologies. An ownership mindset is crucial in this role, and you will be expected to be a significant force driving our engineering program forward.

What You’ll Do

  • Use state-of-the-art engineering methods and tools to design, develop and prototype sub-kW to MW-scale electric machines for mobility applications and beyond beginning with progressing our 150kW automotive traction motor technology from TRL 4 to TRL7. Your primary focus is on electromagnetic design and modeling as well as control scheme development. You will work closely with the engineering team to achieve performance goals and address thermal, NVH, and structural design challenges.
  • Identify innovation opportunities and generate and execute courses of simulated and real-world experimentation to advance motor design and control technologies.
  • Build and implement design discovery and optimization tools utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Propose and oversee research and development projects, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead junior engineering staff to achieve research and development goals.
  • Contribute to IP development and support customer and investor technical diligence as needed.

What We’re Looking For

Basic Requirements

  • Direct, hands-on experience developing electric motors from conceptualization through hardware validation.
  • Extensive understanding of electromagnetic principles and practical design for motor prototypes and scaled production.
  • Strong proficiency using motor design and simulation tools, such as JMAG, Maxwell, MotorCAD, etc.
  • An understanding of high voltage safety standards and creepage, clearance, and insulation design rules.
  • Strong knowledge of motor control techniques used in motor drive systems.
  • An understanding of market trends and challenges, and applications of existing technology within the industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to critically assess design priorities.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Master’s of Science in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep familiarity with axial flux, wound rotor, or other non-PM topologies.
  • Experience in the automotive or aerospace industry.
  • Experience in full product development from concept through large-scale manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience fabricating and testing electric motors and electromagnetic components and materials.
  • Record of peer-reviewed research publications in electric machines and adjacent fields.
  • Experience generating and writing patents or other intellectual property.
  • Experience working in a startup or scrum team environment.
  • Familiarity with regulations and standards related to electric motors.

Why This Role

  • You will have a heavy influence on the technical path of the Torev research and development efforts and will be able to build engineering systems and research and development programs from the ground up.
  • You will work directly with the CEO and technical leadership. Your decisions will matter immediately.
  • The company is well-capitalized at seed stage with clear near-term growth opportunities.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Meaningful equity — this is an early hire at a well-capitalized seed-stage company
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance provided
  • Remote work options are available

Location

  • U.S.-based candidates are preferred. Remote international candidates may be considered for work that does not involve export-controlled technology.

Export Control

  • Some projects at the company involve technology subject to U.S. export control regulations. Employees working on those projects must qualify as a U.S. Person, defined as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), refugee, or asylee.
  • Applicants who do not qualify as U.S. Persons may still apply and may be considered for roles or projects that do not involve export-controlled technology.

Visa Sponsorship

  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.
  • Remote international work options may be available; however, the company does not provide employment-based visa sponsorship for living and working in the United States.
